Ayman el semary
Born in Qalyubia Governorate, Egypt, in 1965, he is one of the most prominent professors and contemporary painting artists in Egypt and the Arab world. He is a Professor of Contemporary Painting at the Faculty of Art Education, Helwan University in Cairo. He has also taught contemporary painting at the American University in Cairo and Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman.
Active in the art scene since the 1990s, El Semary has contributed significantly to both the local and international fine arts movement, presenting more than twenty solo exhibitions and participating in numerous group exhibitions worldwide. He has represented Egypt in several major biennales and prestigious international events, including the Venice International Biennale Egyptian Pavilion, Italy, FotoFest International Biennale in Houston Texas, the Dubrovnik International Biennale in Croatia, the Cairo and Alexandria International Biennales, the International Book Imagination Biennale and the Biennale of the Artist Book at the Alexandria Bibliotheca, In addition to his participation in the International Painting Symposium in Luxor, the First International Painting Symposium in Doha, and the Wood Sculpture Symposium at the Alexandria Bibliotheca. and various contemporary Egyptian art exhibitions in Prague and at the Kunst Museum in Bonn, Germany.
El Semary has also served as a commissaire for multiple artistic events, including the Youth Salon in Cairo, the general commissaire for Contemporary Egyptian Art in Prague and commissaire of the Diya Festival for Arab Youth in Cairo.Throughout his career, he has received numerous local and international awards, most notably the 1995 Grand Prix Akhenaten Golden at the Seventh Youth Salon, the 1997 Grand Prize of the International Federation of Fine Art Critics (AICA) in Rotterdam, the second photography prize at the Ninth Youth Salon 1997, the Jury Prize for Artistic Composition at the Tenth Youth Salon 1998, the Best Pavilion Award at the Dubrovnik International Biennale 1999, and the Honorary Award and Bronze Medal at the Alexandria International Biennale 2003.
His work has been featured in international newspapers and periodicals such as The New York Times, Le Monde, Cairo, Al-Ahram, and Al-Akhbar, and is held in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arab Art in Doha, as well as in private collections across Egypt, The United States, Germany, England, Canada, Poland, Finland, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain.
